Do you already have experience with tintypes and ambrotypes and want to take it a step further? Have you always wanted to make your own large-format negatives and print them on your own handmade photographic paper?

Now is your chance. Join us to discover the wonderful and unique process of wet-plate collodion negatives and salt prints.

Many of us are familiar with the unrivalled level of detail, tonal richness and depth of wet-plate processes used for positives (tintypes and ambrotypes). Prints from wet plate ‘negatives’ offer all this and more. The workshop will explore the differences in the production of wet plate ‘negatives’ and ‘positives’. Different grades of collodion, as well as developers (iron versus pyro) and fixing formulas, will be discussed.
Furthermore, the “negative” process will be explained in comparison to the “positive” process, including the topics of exposure, development and “albumin subbing”. Finally, the concept behind the techniques of “redevelopment” and “intensification” will be explored and practised. Salted paper, one of the earliest methods for printing photographic negatives, produces prints that rival the richness of platinum/palladium. Furthermore, a wide range of colours from brown to black can be achieved using various toners. Paper considerations, exposure options (sunlight vs. artificial light), toning, printing “difficult” negatives and hand waxing are discussed, demonstrated and practised in detail.

In German and English. The course is limited to 4 participants.

Prints made from wet-plate “negatives” do so even more. In this workshop, the differences between the creation of wet-plate collodion “negatives” and “positives” (tintypes and ambrotypes) will be discussed. The different collodion, developers (iron vs. pyro), and fixer formulas will be addressed. In addition, the process for making a collodion “negative”, as opposed to a “positive”, will be highlighted, including exposure, development and albumen subbing.
