Hello, developing 35mm and roll film is all new to me. I’m just feeling my way through it bit by bit... I’d be interested to know the following: what happens if I don’t wind a roll film or 35mm film onto a reel, but simply twist it up and put it in the canister like that?

If that happens, the chemicals won’t be applied evenly and your film will end up as an unevenly developed experiment.

If you are unsure what the reel is for:
It does not wind the film exactly as it is in the film cartridge, but leaves a few millimetres of space between the coils. This ensures that the chemicals can reach the film everywhere.

The film sticks together. Apart from perhaps the very last coil, nothing usable is developed.

I carried out my first experiments with film 40 years ago without a canister (no money). I developed the film by crumpling it up loosely. That way, at least most of the negatives were usable. It mustn’t stick together. Incidentally, in large-scale laboratories, films are hung in frames.
