Hello ? As retirement approaches, childhood dreams are resurfacing. Is there actually any chemistry lab kit available to test whether you’d enjoy developing photos? So you don’t have to buy 1 litre of xy + 5 litres of xxx straight away? I’m thinking of something like the old Kosmos ‘Little Chemist’ set, etc. ? Thanks in advance for any info ? Thomas-Otto

Hello Thomas – Otto, ? I don’t know if there’s a starter kit, and unfortunately I can’t find anything like that at Kosmos either,? But now that analogue photography (I actually hate that word) has been taken over by digital, and only a small analogue community is still holding out, there’s plenty available second-hand at reasonable prices. Plenty, but not everything. To start with, all you need is a 35mm camera, a film developing tank, an enlarger, and three bottles and three trays. Just have a look at all this on eBay, add it to your watch list and keep an eye on the prices. Once you know what the going rates are, strike. Buy a few rolls of film, a small bottle of Babyrodinal, a bit of fixer and a bit of paper developer, and some inexpensive photographic paper. If you don’t enjoy it, simply sell the lot back on eBay (if you haven’t been ripped off, you’ll get almost the same amount back). If you do enjoy it, think about your goals and gradually upgrade or replace your equipment. ? ? Regards, Achim

And there’s also a kit for paper prints: http://www.fotoimpex.de/shop/fotolabor/starter-set-papier-basic.html € I think this is a brilliant starter kit from FOTOIMPEX. Add a simple black-and-white enlarger for 35mm film, such as the Meopta Axomat (from the box), and you’ve got everything you need to get started. € Back when I bought all this in the GDR, I had to save up for ages and often wait until the camera shop had the equipment in stock. That’s just how things used to be here in the East. € OLaf €
