Hello photographers, Has anyone had any experience with CHS 100 II film in 4×5 format or larger, and could help me get started? I’m currently using T-Max 100 and Acurol, which I’ve tested using the zone system. Thanks for any information Andreas

Hi Andreas, Yes, I’m currently testing the CHS 100 II – though initially mainly for use as a black-and-white transparency in my reversal process. The film seems very versatile. The quality is impressive. I hope to be able to present my first results at the fineartforum in November 2013 – perhaps a few 4x5-inch black-and-white transparencies. Unfortunately, I don’t have much time for photography. If you have any specific questions, I’d be happy to try and answer them. I don’t currently have the time to write a detailed review. Hi Klaus, Thanks for your reply – yes, time is the key issue; I won’t be able to retest the film right now – so I’ll stick with my tried-and-tested combination for 4x5: T-Max 100 / Acurol. If anyone has any experience with the new CHS at some point, I’d be grateful for any information and will then test the film in the zone system based on that. But I won’t be able to do that before spring 2014 either. AND THANKS for the link to the Fineartforum – GREAT – unfortunately I don’t have time this weekend, but I find the event interesting in every respect. Hi Andreas, ? I’ve now completed the exposure of 50 sheets of CHS 100 II 4x5 sheet film – I’m currently waiting for the next 100 sheets. What I’ve noticed is that the film reacts quite differently to various developers. In that respect, I think it will be well suited to the zone system. (Though I haven’t tested it yet). ? The classic zone developer is undoubtedly D 76. Personally, I’d prefer that one for this purpose. It’s well-tested, has good handling properties, is readily available and will remain so in the long term. ? Paraminophenol developers sometimes seem to me to work in a somewhat ‘undifferentiated’ way. ? My tip: give the film a try. It does have some interesting characteristics. You don’t have to test it thoroughly straight away. With a well-tried standard developer (D 76 or possibly A 49), you’ll quickly and easily achieve your first results with rich tonal range. ? Perhaps we’ll bump into each other on the fineartforum? It’s all just a question of priorities :-) ? Best regards Klaus

The classic para-aminophenol developer is Rodinal. It is widely used and popular because it is so easy to handle. To my taste (!), however, it does not produce such ‘beautiful’, ‘smooth’ grey tones. (As far as I know, Andreas’s developer is also a para-aminophenol developer). Developers intended for the Zone System must meet a number of conditions. For this, I would always use tried-and-tested and well-documented developers. D 76 is the classic choice here. On the fineartforum, you’ll see images that have “beautiful” and “round” grey tones – in my opinion. Anyone coming to Paderborn can ask me about this – I could say quite a bit on the subject. > Not quite as 'smooth' or 'even'? Grey tones. € That’s because it’s a sharpness developer. It emphasises the grain, so it becomes more visible. Measurements show that the grain isn’t significantly coarser than with other developers, but it does enhance sharpness. € With medium format, and even more so with large format, this plays a lesser role; beautiful grey tones are still possible here. I’ll bring some examples to the faf.

I’ve finally managed it! The first three 4x5-inch black-and-white slides shot on Adox CHS 100 II are now ready. Developed using my “Wehner reversal process” I’ll be showing them at the fineartforum on 2 and 3 November. In addition, a whole event on the subject of black-and-white slides is planned for Sunday 3 November 2013.
