Hi everyone,
€
Tetenal used to make a product called "masking varnish". This must have been a thick substance that apparently allowed you to "mask" certain areas on photographic material using a brush, for example to tone down the image without the toner running into unwanted areas.
That’s exactly what I’m looking for.
Apparently, Tetenal no longer makes this product. Would anything else be suitable for this purpose? The surface I’d be covering with it would be that of baryta paper that’s still damp. After processing, it would need to be possible to peel the stuff off again. Does anyone perhaps have a tip on this? Surely there must be something out there? – perhaps even in a supermarket or chemist’s.

Hi Thomas,
You might find it in art supply shops, and I think airbrush artists use something like that from time to time. You might also find it in shops selling electroplating supplies or at electronics retailers that stock circuit boards. However, I’m not sure if it works with baryta paper, especially when it’s still wet.

Hi Achim, that tip about art supplies is a good one – we actually have a shop here. I’ll pop in. I’d really prefer to use simple home remedies here. Maybe it’ll work with some chewed-up gum? I’ll give it a go.

Hello,
There’s nothing suitable in the electronics sector. The materials used there to mask copper for etching all have to be removed using a solvent and a lot of scrubbing.
Best regards,
Renate

Why make things complicated when there's an easy way? Just buy it here from the host.
