Hello everyone, I managed to get hold of a roll of Agfapan 25 KB film from a friend, which had been stored in a cool cellar. The film is a bit past its sell-by date (1994). Does anyone have any good ideas on the best way to develop this film? What is the film’s approximate speed now, how long should I develop it for, and what agitation speed should I use? I have A49, Xtol and Rodinal at home. Cheers, Oli Edit: I’d like to achieve a gamma of 0.60–0.62.

Hi Oliver, I don’t know how sensitive the film still is, nor can I say how to achieve a gamma of 0.6, but I happen to have an original Agfa Rodinal instruction manual here. The manual states that Agfapan 25 should be processed for 9 minutes at a 1:25 dilution for low subject contrast, 6 minutes at 1:25 for normal contrast, and 7 minutes at 1:50 for high contrast – agitating constantly for the first minute, then every 30 seconds. I also have some old Agfa manuals somewhere; perhaps I’ll find something about gamma in them if I can track them down. € Regards, Achim

Development times for Rodinal are listed here: http://vietnam-photo.com/pdf/agfa_datenblatt.pdf € The 1+100 dilution used to be very popular: http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/Developers/Times_Rodinal/Rodinal.pdf For a gamma of 0.6, this gives a development time of 20 minutes. The actual speed achieved will need to be determined through testing. A loss of 1 stop would be a starting point. € Best regards, Otto!

Hello, a while ago I found an old Agfapan 25 and shot it at its rated speed (25). Developed in Rodinal: € Agfapan APX 25 (expired 07/1993) shot a@20 , developed in Rodinal 1:25 (6 mins + 2 mins (due to the age of the film); the first 30 seconds with continuous agitation, then every 30 sec. 5 times) € € See also: http://rlfsoso.tumblr.com/post/41443117030/hafencity-hamburg-january-2013-on-expired-film € Turned out very well, incredibly sharp. I only had problems with the special magazine insert for my Zenza Bronica ETRSi (645), as it let in a little light. € Hope that helps. € Regards, Rolf

Hi Rolf, Thanks to you too. I’ll probably go for 10 minutes at 1:50 or 20 minutes at 1:100. So far, I’ve got the feeling that the negatives in a 1+50 dilution (or more strongly diluted) have a finer grain and are not as harsh as in a 1+25 dilution.
