Is there a way to test whether contaminants in the lens affect the quality?
In this particular case, I have a lens where there is a mottled fog between two stuck-together lenses. And this is in the outermost elements in each case. Although I can’t find any visible flaws in the print, many will know the feeling: it really does make you wonder whether the quality is suffering after all.

If the fog is small, it will cause a little stray light and reduce the contrast of the image slightly. You compensate for this – completely unconsciously – by adjusting the gradient. If the defect is located at the edge of the lens (as I suspect), it will be eliminated when you stop down the aperture anyway and only ‘interferes’ when you’re focusing.

Hi Uwe,
Unfortunately, it’s not just at the edge, but all over the surface. At one end there are three large irregular patches, and at the other it looks like a maze. It’s quite bizarre.
Best regards, Tim

The Meopta 4-element lenses are good quality and don’t cost much. In that case, I’d buy something new.

Don’t go for the Belaras; they’re 3-element lenses.
