Hello CP, Yes, I develop transparency film using my own process (Wehner’s reversal development). To achieve the renowned high quality of my slides, a significantly greater investment of time and materials is required. My price for reversal processing is €15.50 (all-inclusive – e.g. different speeds – where technically possible). As standard, I process Silvermax and Foma R 100. Unfortunately, however, both films are only available as 35mm film. The situation with roll films is currently somewhat problematic. I had tested the Rollei 80S and the Superpan 200. Unfortunately, these films have repeatedly had quality issues in the past due to their poor packaging. Maco had announced improved packaging – unfortunately, that is all I know about it. I have not yet received any further information from Maco. At the moment, I am testing alternative roll films. Unfortunately, there is no final result yet. I have reverse-developed sheet films for my own purposes. (At Photokina, I showed an 8x10-inch black-and-white slide – with exposure on the former ADOX Pan 25). However, due to the very high workload involved, I would only develop sheet films in exceptional cases. I would love to project 4x5-inch black-and-white slides at the next fineartforum in Paderborn (2–3 November 2013). But for now, that’s nothing more than an idea. Primarily, it’s a question of time. A chemistry kit for the black-and-white reversal process is also being considered. Prototypes for this already exist. Due to time constraints, this project is on hold for the time being. Hello CP, As far as I know, Gütschmann (or its successor) makes projectors for 9x12 (4x5). One possible sheet film might be the new CHS II from Adox. (I’d already tested the Efke version – but discarded it due to inconsistent emulsion quality). Perhaps we could work together to prepare something for the fineartforum (Nov. 2013)? Good to know! I own a Linhof 6x7; I suspect it’s from Liesegang. It’s a bit of a relic, but still of quite good quality.

One possible sheet film option might be the new CHS II from Adox.

That would be lovely, of course. I’ve been looking for a replacement for the Scala for quite some time. I once took some large-format Scala slides along with a few 4x5" light plates to a meeting when applying for a commission. It went down incredibly well!

I’d be very interested in that. However, I’ve been very ill over the last six months and I don’t know what the future holds for me professionally. So it certainly won’t work out for me this year. But: I’m an architectural historian by profession and have been photographing Greek temples in Asia Minor, Magna Graecia and, of course, in mainland Greece for many years in the 13x18cm format (I originally intended to stick to this format and own a Technika V 13x18cm for this purpose, but as things stand, I haven’t been able to use this format, I’m simply on the move far too much on foot or by bike to use it all the time), 4x5”, 6x7cm and 6x6cm. I also have a large number of photographs of historic Phrygia. I’d love to present these photographs at some point. These are all black-and-white negatives. I have long intended to make slides from these negatives. However, I have little to no experience in this area. But, as I am really very interested in your suggestion! – Could we aim for 2014?

Hello CP, On the subject of projectors: about two years ago, I had a very brief conversation with the company Gütschmann (the successor firm). We also discussed GF slides. I’ve been thinking about it ever since. (Perhaps someone here on the forum has more information?) 2014 would indeed be a more realistic timeframe for a joint project at the fineartforum. Because: the slides haven’t been photographed yet, the potential sheet film isn’t available yet – and hasn’t been tested either. The projector issue hasn’t been resolved yet. At the moment I’m also extremely busy – I’m putting off a lot of things that need to be done urgently. I simply can’t manage everything. I don’t have time for photography at the moment either. On copying slides (from negatives): I received an enquiry about this some time ago. A specialist laboratory (!) had developed a Scala film using the negative process. The enquiry to me was whether I could produce slides from the negatives in order to salvage this film. After many weeks of testing, I found a way to copy the slides so that they met my quality standards. But even that is quite labour-intensive. The copied slides also have a distinctly different look to the original slides. They are, after all, reproductions. In that respect, it can only be seen as a stopgap measure. But it is possible. Yes, that’s my experience too: large-format slides always make a special impression on the viewer. I don’t have a projector for my (few) large-format slides (4x5 and 8x10 inches) either. I place them on the light table and enjoy them. Nothing can replace that experience. That corresponds exactly to my philosophy of photography. The concept of the ‘original’ is very important to me in photography. That is why this is my subject. Let’s stay in touch. Feel free to ask again – otherwise I sometimes lose track of things myself. Addendum: I have learnt the following new information regarding glass plate slide projectors: Apparently, Leitz produced a projector called the ‘Epidiaskop’. This was apparently used in educational settings. I myself have seen a glass plate projector in a theatre that was intended for background projection. A long time ago, I had also toyed with the idea of building my own GF projector. The difficulty ultimately lay in effectively dissipating the waste heat generated by the high illuminance required. But that was before the era of LEDs. Perhaps it’s easier to do today. Best regards, Klaus

Have a look at the Wikipedia entry for ‘epidiascope’. Leitz wasn’t the only manufacturer of epidiascopes. If you illuminate the original from below with LED light, it could well be turned into a glass-frame projector. The problem with epidiascopes has always been the light intensity (brightness of the projected image), as the originals were illuminated from above. This might be solved with LED backlighting. Hi Matthias, Thanks for your suggestion. My thoughts were along similar lines. I’d also managed to get hold of a disused overhead projector. Some of the mechanical and optical components might have come in handy. Unfortunately, I no longer have time for such projects. As a result, the overhead projector is now moving alarmingly high up my disposal list. It has now reached ‘critically endangered’ status. But a projection format of 30x30 cm would certainly be something... Another problem is finding a suitable lens for the projection. In my collection, for example, I have a 600mm Apo-Ronar. Unfortunately, it’s rather slow. Perhaps I’ll give it some more thought after all. Thanks and best regards Klaus

Can you share your experience on this? I do face this problem from time to time. In particular, I’ve often needed 35mm slides for projection. I used to do this by simply photographing them. The results weren’t really good, but they were sufficient for presentation purposes. My attempts with Ilford Ortho and Genius Printfilm (?) weren’t exactly convincing – so I gave up on that. Perhaps a hybrid approach might get us further.

Hello CP, In my experience, there is simply no way to produce a reproduction from a negative that looks exactly like an original black-and-white slide. You will always be able to tell that it is a reproduction. However, using my copying method, I have managed to achieve densities similar to those of the original. (Specifically, densities similar to those I achieve with my reversal process based on Wehner’s method). This is probably not possible with the materials you mentioned. However, as this also touches on some of my chemical reversal development technologies, I ask for your understanding that I cannot provide any details here. Hello Klaus! I’ve since found out that Göttschmann manufactured thirty 9x12cm (4x5" should also work) projectors, but discontinued production due to a lack of demand. However – and this does seem a bit contradictory – there is still a steady demand for this projector. I’m not at my computer right now. I’ll send you the link to my source later. Best regards!
