Hi everyone, Has anyone here used the Fotospeed Antique Toner yet? What has been your experience with the claim that it ‘looks more authentic than standard sepia toners’? Can you describe this ‘authenticity’ in words? I’d also be particularly interested to know if there are any noticeable differences between warm-tone and neutral-tone papers. It comes without a bleaching agent and therefore appears to be a traditional sulphur toner, similar to Viradon. Spürsinn refers to ‘sepia tones’. The effect is likely to be similar to that of other toners of this type. A wide range of sample images can be found on Mr Moersch’s website (have a look under the keyword ‘MT5 Sepia’).

This isn’t really a toner in the usual sense, but more of a colouring agent, much like the tea or coffee mentioned earlier. Fotospeed also specifically states in the description: “Fotospeed AD10 Antique Dye is used after sepia toning to give prints that old-fashioned nicotine stain in the borders. It can be diluted to alter the shade of yellow required. Once the print has been passed through the solution, it should not be washed but wiped and allowed to dry." So this stuff is just used for colouring, not toning. You could really make a cheaper concentrate yourself using black tea or instant coffee.

You can actually make a concentrate more cheaply using black tea or instant coffee.

The question is: wouldn’t such a measure have a negative effect on the acidity balance of the print? I’m not sure about tea, as it does contain tannic acid, but coffee is definitely acidic. Does anyone know if this would damage the print in the long run? Otherwise, it would be an interesting creative technique for certain subjects...
