Hi there,
Since I’ve happily got rid of my stupid, useless 6x AP plastic magnifying glass, I needed a replacement.
A Kaiser 5x magnifier works reasonably well for examining 6x7 slides and negatives – even if it doesn’t quite cover the entire format and there are colour fringes visible towards the edges. (I might have fallen for a knock-off?)
But 5x isn’t enough for me to judge the sharpness, and whilst I was having a rummage, I came across this:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Seibert-Wetzlar-emoskop-Mikroskop-in-original-Verpackung-/160918881411?pt=Alte_Berufe&hash=item2577834483
The Emoskop is made by EMO, Wetzlar, which has a reputation that precedes it... but does anyone actually know this device and can say whether it works underwater?
It would also be nice to take it on trips, e.g. to find tardigrades :-) http://www.baertierchen.de/main.html
(I actually came across the Emoskop through this super-amusing site. Warning: it’s addictive!)

To me, it looks more like an accessory for microscopes – though I’m not familiar with this Emoskop.
If that’s really the case, then you’d be hard pressed to get a clear view of a 6x7 slide with it.
You could always ask the seller for the dimensions.

How deep should it be able to dive?

Of course I already know those links, and a few more besides, including the dimensions... :-)
As for the required diving depth, I’d rather not comment on that for reasons of conscience, and besides, it is Monday today.
And, no, this is a genuine ‘standalone’ device in miniature.
Sure, the image circle is tiny, but that doesn’t matter because I’ve got the big Kaiser lens for that. It’s just for assessing detail sharpness.
I was just curious to know if anyone’s familiar with it and whether it’s worth it; even if the investment is minimal, of course. Thanks. Carry on.
Cheers

How deep do you want it to be able to dive?
A diver who doesn’t dive doesn’t dive at all... :)
Well, you’ll probably have to place a bid if you want to find out whether it works underwater.
My tip: at least take it out of the leather case first.
Some people also use lenses as a substitute for magnifying glasses (a 6–7-element standard lens, for example).
I’ve heard that’s supposed to work too.
Others are saving up for a diving trip—er, I meant a second-hand magnifying glass—and that one really does dive.

Well, I suppose I’ll just have a go at trying to get hold of the thing on the off chance and let you know how it goes.
I reckon the only way to get hold of second-hand magnifying glasses (I mean, the really top-notch ones) is to wrest them from the cold hands of a photographer who’s currently on his deathbed...
Then again, it’s not really that surprising, because what exactly does wear out on a magnifying glass? Unless, of course, you take it diving with you to examine the parasites between the teeth of the great white. Enough diving for today, best regards,
Frank

Hello!
Tadäus, I’ve finally got my hands on one of these! It’s only got a plastic eyepiece tube, but the optics are brilliant!
The binoculars function is, well, a joke, but as a magnifier it’s brilliant. Up to 30x enlargement (tiny field of view...) with no colour fringing, so sharp that I can make out the colour dots on my monitor with perfectly defined edges, and even the grain structure on the ATP (in the early stages).
Mine has a thread counter with 1/10th graduations.
Preliminary verdict: 50 euros well spent. It does the job.
Apparently there’s also a slightly larger version of this tiny thing, but I’ve never seen it on offer anywhere.

Congratulations! :)
Inspired by the lens cut in that link, I’ve just had a go at using a microscope eyepiece (10x enlargement).
It works perfectly well even when held the wrong way round. It’s hard to believe that these colourful specks, when viewed from a distance, produce a decent monitor image....
