Hello everyone,
As a beginner, I’m about to develop my first roll of film myself.
I have the AP tank for two 35mm films (and the chemicals, of course). I was just about to mix the developer when I realised I had a real beginner’s question:
How much developer should I put in the tank? Do I fill it right to the brim? Or just halfway?
I couldn’t find anything in the AP instructions, and for the film (APX100) I only found dilution ratios and agitation rates, but no liquid quantities.
So how much developer, fixer, etc. goes into the tank?

The filling capacities are stated on the bottom of the tin; for 2 KB films, as far as I know, it’s 630 ml.

I’m assuming it doesn’t matter whether I develop one or two films? Is the amount of liquid always the same?
After a start like this, things can only get better…

Once the canister is upright, the film or films must be completely covered by the developer solution. You can test this beforehand using the reel(s) in a specific amount of water. It’s better to use a little too much than too little – some developers foam up.
Exception: If you’re carrying out what’s known as ‘rotary development’, which I’m sure isn’t what you’re planning to do. In that case, a smaller amount of developer solution will suffice.

The AP tanks have the development quantities printed on the bottom. Yours should have the figures for 1x135 (135 corresponds to 35mm), 2x 135 and 120/220 printed on them.
If this is your first time, I wouldn’t recommend developing two films at once. If you mess up, both will be ruined.

Thanks for your help,
I’ve now developed my first APX in Adonal 1:50 for 13 minutes, and it certainly worked well enough for me to recognise the subjects
:-)
Tomorrow I’ll be moving on to the positive process….
