Hi there We haven’t discussed the potential price trends for photographic products in the UK yet. I’m not holding out much hope. After all, the Brits aren’t getting anywhere politically with the EU. I expect that in future, everything from the UK will be subject to full customs duty. In principle, a 20% tax would make all Mirko products more competitive. But for Ilford users, it’ll get really expensive. What’s your take on this? And Mirko, what’s your take? Regards, Marcus

Better stock up on some hp5+ and delta 100 and freeze them ;). But seriously: it’s a perfectly valid question. I hadn’t thought that far ahead yet. Ultimately, I suppose we’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out. For Ilford, this wouldn’t just make the German market tougher in terms of price pressure. Regards, Christian

The 20% is the excise duty in the UK, which is equivalent to our VAT. An exporter does not, of course, pay this. What would be relevant for us is the import duty on film/paper, which is a maximum of 6.5%. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens in the end and react accordingly. I’ve already started experimenting with Foma film and have ordered some paper. I’d certainly miss the FP 4, and the PAN F as well.

Guys, relax – nothing’s actually going to happen. It’ll either be a Brexit exit or a free trade agreement. Nobody can really afford to do anything else here. Neither the British nor Europe. It’s all just hot air and scaremongering. We’ve got far more pressing problems around the world that are actually threatening our very existence.

The maximum tariff treatment that material from the UK faces is the same as that which material from Japan has always been subject to. And the unwelcome price rises seen in recent years from Ilford and Fuji are not due to customs duties, but to the manufacturers themselves. Best regards

In the country of origin itself, the price rises weren’t all that bad. When it comes to prices here, the exchange rate is also a factor, and at the moment it looks significantly better for buyers from the eurozone than it did before the referendum.

In figures: Just before Brexit, 1 euro was worth £0.78; at the moment, it’s around £0.88. But with Draghi’s unrestrained creation of money out of thin air, the trend could easily reverse again.
