Hello everyone, Having been developing my own films for a while now, I wanted to take the next step and try making baryta prints, but I’ve failed spectacularly. I’d therefore be grateful for any suggestions regarding the following problem: The exposures I’ve taken lack contrast. The problem isn’t that the silver hasn’t been fully developed; rather, the highlights are missing. Even with short exposure times, there is no white. I then did a comparison using the same exposure time with PE paper. The contrast is correct there. For my DUKA lighting, I have a yellow and a red lamp. Could that be the problem? Perhaps I should leave the yellow lamp out for a while. I’ve got myself some new Adotol paper developer. I’m sure the fault lies with me. Regards, Klaus

Thanks, Franz, that was actually my next idea. One more question: I’ve got a baker’s drying press. I thought I’d try drying them to a high gloss. They do shine – but it’s not even. If you look at them at an angle against the light, it looks streaky with faint speckles. It’s hard to describe. It looks quite uneven. I’m also lacking the experience to know what sort of result to expect. Is this a sign that I didn’t press hard enough with the pressure roller? If anyone has a link where I can read up on this a bit more, I’d be grateful. The specialist literature I have is very vague on this point. Regards, Klaus

Hello Klaus, There are already quite a few threads here in the forum about the Bäcker, particularly with regard to the reference for high-gloss drying. I myself gave up after countless attempts and now only dry against a cloth, which I actually prefer. I haven’t seen a single baryta print dried to a perfect high gloss so far. Regards Marc

Thanks for your feedback. I’ll have a browse through the forum then. It works quite well against the cloth. The contrast has improved a bit, but it’s still not quite up to scratch. ;-) I’ll probably need to tweak it a bit more. Thanks to you all. Best regards, Klaus

Hello Klaus, Getting baryta paper to dry to a high gloss is the ultimate challenge. It can be done, but the road to mastering it is long and arduous. Best regards, Franz

This paper requires a lot of magenta. In my experience, what you print at level 2 on the MCP, you’ll need to print at level 4 on the Vario Classic (if you’re aiming for the same level of contrast). Incidentally, a selenium toner works wonders with this paper when it comes to contrast.
